Market Update
After eight days of protesting at Olowalu the Hawaii Department of Transportation has agreed to find a better solution to protect the Honoapiilani Highway from erosion along the coastline. They intended to build a seawall of stones to stop the erosion.
Protestors succeeded in stopping the multi-million dollar Olowalu seawall project by convincing HDOT that it was a "band-aid" solution and they need to come up with something better. Olowalu is home to the Hawaiian monk seal, a thriving reef and a popular fishing and surfing spot all which could've been destroyed by a seawall.
After walking the shoreline and talking with the community, HDOT agreed that they will re-stripe the highway and move lanes in the mauka direction while they come up with the funding for a more permanent solution.
