Maui's Only Vineyard

Maui is not typically known for it’s wine but it is home to one vineyard in Ulupalakua.  Maui Winehas 16 acres of vineyard growing on the slopes of Haleakala overlooking South Maui.  The vines are netted and carefully cared for so tha birds and other pests don’t get to them befoer they can be crafted into delicious wines.  They grow grape varietals such as syrah, malbec, grenache, viogner, chenin blan and gewurztaminer.

The winery has a rich history as it located on what has been established as a ranch for over 150 years since the days of one of Hawaii’s last monarchs, who used to visist the ranch, King David Kalakaua. The tasting room is in what they call, “The King’s Cottage, ” a cottage built specifically for the merrie monacrch’s visits to the ranch.  They’ve recently opened a private tastig room where you can try the more exclusive wines in what they call “the old jail.”  A small cottage with a dungeon like looking basement which they believe is where they put those folks who had to much wine at these merry gatherings.

Maui Wine is also known for their famous pineapple wine, made with no grapes, completely of pineapples fermented through a special process.
